In Boone, North Carolina the first Friday of every month only ever means one thing: Art Crawl. This month I decided to venture out into the cold to see if I could meet any cool local artists that decided to brave the low temperatures as well. As I was walking by Bald Guy Brew, mid sip into my free cup of cheap red wine (hey, I wasn't complaining) a man called over, "Now I know you came all the way out here just to see my ornaments!" Following the voice led me straight to a big burly looking mountain man named Zeke. He proudly showed me his hand-carved ornaments and was especially excited about the Christmas pickle... yes, you read that right, the Christmas pickle. After we shared a laugh over some obvious pickle innuendos, he began to explain the tradition of the pickle.
Every Christmas the pickle is meant to be hung up on the tree in a spot where it is almost impossible to find. Whoever finds the pickle on Christmas morning gets and extra present and is in charge of hiding it the following year. Zeke was kind enough to let me keep one of his.. scratch that.. one of the Christmas pickles so I could start the tradition with my family.
His work is not limited to vegetable ornaments! Zeke was also selling beautiful fish ornaments when I had met him during the Art-crawl. He specializes in walking sticks and rolling pins as well tree spirit carvings and driftwood.
If you are interested in placing a special order or adding a Christmas pickle to your family tree, just give him a call!
