Daniel Anauo always planned on moving away from home for college. He grew up in Hickory, North Carolina and had his heart set on becoming a math teacher. It wasn't until his senior year of high school when music started pulling his heart strings towards other options.
He has been signing and playing the the piano for as long as he can remember. His home was always filled with sweet sounds of music since he, his mother, his brother and his grandmother all play the piano. He and his brother sang in a church choir while his mother was the church's pianist. Music had always just been a part of life for him. In high school he sang in the choir and took piano lessons outside of school. As he began preparing for his senior recital, he started to realize a career in music could be his calling.
Daniel decided to study music education to become a high school chorus teacher. He was deciding between University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Appalachian State University. To him, there was no comparison to the music education program at Appalachian State.
In his third year at Appalachian State, Daniel has made the small town of Boone his home. He is involved in programs including the National Association for Music Education, American Choral Directors Association and the a cappella group, Enharmonix. Daniel is currently preparing for his thesis about the influence of pop music in the choral music and how it could be incorporated into rehearsal techniques.
Watching Daniel play and sing brought a smile to my face. I admire the way he allows music to overtake him as if it is just him and the notes, nothing else.

| "It... it is totally...I can't describe how it makes me feel because you can't compare anything to it. It is so relatable and therapeutic. You can study it, but there is still an aspect of music you can't put into words...some feeling that you just can't pinpoint." |
